NECA’S BATMAN/ALIENS & GREEN LANTERN/PREDATOR TWO-PACKS!

It’s Wednesday, you know what that means… ToyFarce reviews!

This week, we’re looking at the NYCC 2019 exclusive two-packs from NECA, that included a Batman figure with a Joker Alien, and a Green Lantern with a Yellow Lantern Predator! I had been on the lookout for those sets since they were announced. They were inevitably all scalped on eBay and people wanted over $200 for each set for a while, until one day, they started to randomly pop up at Walmart stores during 2020. This led to the prices going a bit down, and after waiting for a while, I found someone in a Facebook group that would sell them at a reasonable price (I still overpaid, but they were only $15-20 more than retail, which was $59,99).

The packaging are some of the most sober ones i’ve seen. A simple black box with logos on the front. No text, no pictures, nothing else.

When NECA made DC Comics figures… and did it really well!

First off, the Batman and Aliens set. I knew I wanted that set since I first saw that Batman figure. It’s a hell of a nice Batman figure! At the time, DC Collectibles/Direct and Mattel were the only ones in town doing DC figures, so seeing that NECA version was a nice surprise. Then, there is that Joker-looking Xenomorph, which is better than having a basic, normal Xenomorph! I’ll take a variation of the normal Xenomorph any day!

Basic packaging is basic.

The cape on that Batman figure has a great feel to it. DC Collectibles ended up doing a similar one on the Batman vs TMNT figures.

The Green Lantern/Predator set ended up being the most interesting one, in the sense that it not only gave us a great Hal Jordan figure, but also a Yellow Lantern Predator, which would be terrifying, when you think about it. The Yellow Lantern corps’ emotion being fear, the Predator would be a great asset for them.

Both figures come with various accessories, green and yellow constructs from their rings.

I would lie if I said I wanted those sets for the Alien and Predator figures over the DC Comics ones, but in the end, both figures in each set ended up being great. NECA still did an awesome job with those DC figures. I’d love them to revisit that down the line. There is also an ‘Armored Batman’ and Predator, and a Superman with a normal Xenomorph two-packs, which I might get someday, but those were really my priority, considering Batman and Green Lantern are my favorite characters.

Comparison with the DC Essentials Batman, and the McFarlane Toys Batman (Detective Comics 1000) which all came out within a year.

What? You don’t like this makeover? I spared no expense!

“Hello. - Hello! - Follow me. - Ok!”

Well, the title says it all. Recently, during one of those fun “Ask me anything” in Instagram stories, a follower asked about what would be the franchise that never had any toys made that I would want to see toys from. It led me to think about it for a while, but I kept coming back to one answer: The Oddworld games.

The first game, Abe’s Oddyssey, made by Oddworld Inhabitants, came out on the Playstation (first of the name!) in 1997, and was followed by Abe’s Exodus in 1998. Then, Munch’s Oddyssey came out in 2001 on the XBox (first of the name, too!), along with Stranger’s Wrath in 2005. Then… nothing. Nothing happened until 2014, when the first game would be re-issued in a re-vamped “New’n’Tasty” version, for the consoles of that generation (PS3, XBox 360). And now, the re-vamped second game, now called “SoulStorm” came out in April, while a physical version of it comes out tomorrow (July 6th). The stories were great, the characters memorable, and you really wanted to save as many mudokons as you could! According to wikipedia, they have sold over 7 million copies overall. Those games (the first two, at least) figure in most of the “Top video games of all time” lists and i’m sure that a huge number of people remember Abe, the mudokons and all the other characters very fondly.

BUT… There has never been any action figures made for that franchise! A few plushes, and a couple of statues (which all came within the last decade) are the only official merch we ever got (The collector’s edition of SoulStorm which comes out tomorrow will have a statue of Abe). The game was successful, Abe is an iconic character for an entire generation of gamers who played all the games since the PS1, so why did we never get any plastic representation of those characters to put on our shelves?

The characters are as TOYETIC (potentially marketable as a toy) as toyetic can be! Here’s a rundown, only from the first 2 games:

The hero, Abe, savior of the mudokons. He can have a bottle of SoulStorm Brew as an accessory, or psychic effects!

The Sligs were a super pain in ass in the video games. There are several types of them also (flying ones, baseball bat, shotgun), so more figures waiting to be made!

The Sligs were sometimes accompanied by Slogs, which were basically big angry dogs.

The Glukkons were the “corporate bosses”. They look like triangle facing down with a head at the top and feet. Different colors, cigars, hats… many possibilities too.

The wildlife of the games also had some interesting (and terrifying) species, such as the Scrabs, who gave us nightmares, running after our character anytime they spotted us. It would be nice to have one on our desk, as a trophy!

The Paramites were equally vicious. Multiple mudokon deaths happen because of those.

Munch, from the later game “Munch’s oddyssey”, could come with the little wheelchair he uses in the game to move around faster as an accessory.

Army builder: the mudokons. There were so many different ones in the game! They can reuse most of the parts from Abe’s sculpt, and be painted a slightly different lighter shade. Add accessories to them and you can make as many as you want.

Abe can also get a vehicle/playset with an Elum, which he gets to ride in the games.

And tell me this doesn’t SCREAM “SDCC Exclusive”! I dare you!

And that is just from the first 2-3 games. There’s plenty more characters in the Stranger’s Wrath too. We can get to those later, after doing all the previous ones!

IS THERE A DEMAND FOR THAT?

In 2019, there was a Kickstarter project to make a big art book about the game, with a goal of 45,000£ (about $60,000) that collected over 154,000£ (nearly $215,000). So there is definitely an audience for that.

NEW DC MULTIVERSE LEAK: “HEROES DO DO THAT” TWO-PACK?!

It’s been a weird couple of weeks for the caped crusader! A few weeks ago, we learned that Warner executives had asked to the producer of the 3rd season of the Harley Quinn animated series to remove a scene where Batman was… practicing oral sex on Catwoman. This led to internet catching fire (as it usually does…). Fans posted various pics of the comic book, or parodies with action figures in very “ooh lala” positions. The best one though, came from Zack Snyder himself, (the guy from the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut hashtag!) who just posted this:

It is canon!

Now, ToyFarce has discovered a leaked listing from an organic vegetable store in Latvia that mentioned that a two-pack of Batman and Catwoman called “Heroes do do that” would come out later this year. Let’s be honest, if there is one person that would do this, it certainly is Todd McFarlane. The man has a documentary about himself called “Like Hell I Won’t”! If DC would tell him to specifically not do a two-pack of Batman and Catwoman, and specifically not put them in a certain position in the packaging, we all know what Toddy Mac would reply: the title of his documentary. This is the face of a man who would not be scared to make a two-pack of Batman going down on Catwoman. Look at him!

We have yet to see any picture from the two-pack, but it will actually be the first Catwoman figure from McFarlane Toys.

Here is a “fake” statement from DC about Batman going down on Catwoman. (I don’t know why they say it’s fake. Next thing you know, they’ll say that ToyFarce is fake! *eyeroll*)

Heroes don’t do that. They do way worse!

This week, we’re looking at the NECA Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Accessory set. The set was announced in September 2020, and was available for pre-order on the NECA store for an entire week (from Sept 4 to Sept 11, 2020), for $49,99 (and is now available only via secondary market or scalpers). It’s a nice set that adds some cool accessories for your TMNT figures, along with extra heads, and baby turtles!

The new heads are a nice addition. Some of the original facial expressions on those figures were a bit too serious (Donatello looks like he’s constipated), so having smiling faces is great, as is getting a serious face for Michaelangelo. Also great for decapitation pictures!

The Hasbro Marvel Legends team (Ryan Ting, Dan Yun and Dwight Stall) has been part of our everyday life for some time now. From their nice livestreams (which can be a great experience once you disable the chat), to the rounds of interviews (where they had to sit through everybody’s different intros), to the reveals on social media (hitting like an RKO, from outta nowhere!), they have become a member of our collective toy families. But now, there hasn’t been any new announcement for 7 days… 7 entire days! A lifetime, for some (like bugs, for example). Is everything OK? Should the authorities be called? What happened? ToyFarce investigates.

The Toy of the Year (we need to make it happen, people!)

It can be any of the following reasons:

After releasing what most people agree is the Toy of the Year, the action figure of The Hood, the Marvel Legends team spent some time using different members of the toy community (Fwoosh, SuperSorrell, Toying Around, MCUCollector24, Shartimus Prime,…) to reveal new figures for them. Some might say that they were looking for a successor for their team, someone worthy to reveal new figures in the future, a bit like in My Hero Academia, where All Might was looking for a successor for his power. Have they found a successor? We don’t know!

Or it could be aliens. Maybe the entire team has been abducted by aliens, who were jealous of earth getting all the cool reveals. Now, the planet Glizmorpp will also get cool Marvel Legends action figures, and they will also be annoyed when those end up being exclusives to Zmips-7, their biggest superstores.

The latest reveal was Sandman, on June 18th. (That pose!)

Or… the most probable reason:

They are getting some rest before going ALL OUT in July. Dan Yun had teased it on Twitter. The calm before the storm, if you will. They are getting some R&R time before hitting us with devastating blows to our wallets. And we’ll totally be there for it! With a reveal of the next Marvel Legends Haslab project right around the corner (please be the Thanos Copter)…

…the team is probably busy preparing all the PowerPoint files they’ll need for their next livestreams! Let’s hope for many slides!

It’s Wednesday, you know what that means… CEROOO MIEEEEDOOOO!

Today, we’re taking a look at the Penta Zero M and Rey Fenix figures from the Legends of Lucha Libre line by Boss Fight Studio! Those had been announced some time before the AEW ones from Jazwares were, and I had pre-ordered them right away, but because 2020 happened and all that, they ended up delayed and came out after the AEW Unrivaled series 2 were released (I got them in January and they were sitting on the ol’ pile ever since, waiting for their moment).

The packaging is quite colorful with all the orange and blue (Penta and Fenix in the next Portal game: CONFIRMED?)

The figures themselves are very good! I reviewed the Sam & Max figures from Boss Fight Studio earlier this year, and thought they did an awesome job on those, and those Legends of Lucha Libre do not disappoint either. Tons of articulations, which is perfect for acrobatic luchadores like the Lucha Bros. My only nitpick is that they are slightly smaller than I expected (being used to the AEW Unrivaled ones), but what they lack in size, they make up in articulations, and extra heads and hands.

Boss Fight Studio killed it with those 2 figures, and I’m glad there’s more to come. They have already announced a ‘sub-line', the Legends of Lucha Libre: Fanaticos (I see those as equivalent of the WWE Basics line), with Juventud Guerrera, Taya Valkyrie (NXT’s Frankie Monet) and different versions of Penta and Fenix wearing t-shirts (yup). They also have a huge Extreme Set Diorama, which comes with a ring and arena diorama that looks pretty sweet!

AMIDST SILVERHAWKS PAINT CONTROVERSY, SUPER7 ANNOUNCES NEXT WAVE OF ULTIMATE TMNT!!

A few days ago, Super7 unveiled the first pictures of the digital sculpts of the Silverhawks figures… and inevitably, people started to complain! (That could actually be another article, and just end there). From the pictures of the digital scuplts (read that again, digital sculpts. Not even actual figures yet), the paint didn’t look as shiny as the figures used to be in our collective memories… Oh noooo!

“WHAT? Those are not shiny enough!”

In the late 80’s, the figures used “vac-metal” (or vacuum metallizing) and were oh-so-shiny, and that is how people are remembering them. On the new Super7 figures digital sculpt pictures (once again, not even prototype pics, just digital), the colors seemed more matte, rather than very shiny. Collectors will not be able to use their Silverhawks figures as mirrors to look if they have something stuck between their teeth. Such a shame!

ToyFarce did some digging, and found out about what the next wave of Ultimate TMNT will be, and you’ll never guess who the characters are! (#3 will shock you… sorry, old clickbaits habits).

The plan is for the next wave of TMNT Ultimates to include Chrome Dome, Robotic Bebop, Robotic Rocksteady and a Robotic Foot Soldier! All those figures which were vac-metal back then too! No digital sculpt pictures yet to see if they have a shine to them, but we’ll keep you posted as soon as we hear more.

There are also early rumors that the next wave could be inspired by the Metal Mutants wave from the early 90’s!

NEXT MARVEL LEGEND SERIES PROP REPLICA REVEALED!

Hasbro’s Marvel Legends Series prop replicas are an awesome line for those who want nice replica, at an affordable price. They are of excellent quality, look awesome on a shelf, and usually have light-up or sound features (when applicable… Obviously, Captain America’s shield doesn’t need light or a sound chip that says “I AM A SHIELD”).

The next few releases already announced also look pretty good, like the Eye of Agamotto necklace, with the Time stone that lights up and the different parts moving, or the blue version of Cap’s shield from Winter Soldier (once again, the shield does not talk.)

Another intriguing one is the Iron Man Hand Gauntlet, which kinda looks like a bedazzled rubber glove to wash the dishes. But at least, it can snap!

SPOILER WARNING: If you haven’t watched Loki’s first episode yet, you might want to skip the rest of the article!

ToyFarce got the scoop for you about the next one that should be revealed very soon! An employee from the cardboard factory that prints the boxes send us a picture from what’s coming next: The “Lost and found drawer” from the Disney+ series, Loki! It even comes with a few paperweights, that will have a light-up feature!

Some say it’s photoshopped (badly)… but joke’s on them: ToyFarce doesn’t even have Photoshop!

Just like in that scene when Loki is looking for his Tesseract!

Today, we’re taking a look at the Ronin Mandalorian from the Movie Realization Star Wars line from Bandai!

The Movie Realization line from Bandai is that awesome line where they take characters from either Star Wars or Marvel, and give them a feudal Japan look. And oh boy, do they look great! Darth Vader as a Samurai, the Stormtroopers, Darth Maul as a demon (Oni), Boba and Jango Fett as Ronin,… They are all very cool. The latest release was the Ronin Mandalorian, which came out on the Premium Bandai website in the USA (I believe it was even exclusive to the USA, since I still haven’t seen it on my usual japanese websites).

For those unfamiliar with the line, the boxes all have that Star Wars quote inside the box. Such a nice little detail, that make you feel at home right away!

Inside the box

The Ronin Mandalorian figure comes with extra sets of hands (as all the other figures from that line did), a small sword and sheath, his blaster gun and his rifle. Not many accessories, but I guess he didn’t need them. A Grogu would have been nice, looking like a Japanese frog or something, but I’m staying hopeful that the IG-88 that never came out, that they teased over the last 2 years at various Comic Cons, will be reworked into IG-11 and come with it!

First impression: “Damn, that is a good looking figure.”

The cape is actually made of fabric! The previous figures had plastic capes, so that is a great improvement!

When I took that picture, I thought he looked cool, like he just took his sword out, ready for action, but now, I only see the ‘Staying Alive’ disco dance move…which turns out to be even better!

He can *nearly* hold the rifle in a normal position.

BONUS: I had to rearrange the shelf so that they would all fit, and decided to add a few pics from that. Enjoy!

Only missing the white “prototype” Boba Fett and the second Samurai Darth Vader. There is also a Comic Con exclusive version of the Sandtrooper where he has a black shoulder pad instead of orange, but that’s just silly.

Admiral Ackbar and IG-88 have been shown at various comic cons for a couple of years now, but never came out, so no idea what the future holds for the line. Hopefully, more to come, but that shelf is definitely running out of space, though… #CollectorsProblems
