RIP DC DIRECT - 1998-2020

On August 10, 2020, it was announced that DC Direct, the DC Comics in-house toy company, was shut down as part of a massive restructuring from Warner Bros. DC Direct had been producing toys for 22 years, was rebranded DC Collectibles in 2012 before switching back to DC Direct earlier this year. 

Usually, ToyFarce News would make jokes about that, such as "Company that announced mostly repaints for the rest of the year surprisingly shut down", or "Toy manufacturer specialized in Batman and Harley Quinn to stop producing collectibles", but to be honest, we're pretty sad about it.

We know many of you have been collectors of DC Direct products, going back to the first MAD action figures, to the Green Lantern line, the Batman Hush line , the 12inch figures, the Batman Black & White statues, the Animated Series line, etc... and that many of you must be pretty upset about DC Direct shutting down, so we thought we would have some sort of a funeral, a place where we can mourn.

Toy News International posted an article letting us know which product were far enough into production so that they will be released. Sorry, folks... We really tried to find an angle where we could say something funny, but we're pretty sure it wouldn't have been welcome right now, as it is 'too soon'. ToyFarce News wishes all the best in all of their future endeavors to all the talented artists and sculptors that were working there, and hope they find a great place to share their talents very soon.

REVIEW: NECA'S ULTIMATE FLASHER RAPHAEL AND CASEY JONES 2-PACK !

After months of requests by at least 2 people (!), ToyFarce News has decided to start doing some reviews! In order not to limit ourselves, it will be a mix of old and news toys. We will try to do reviews as often as possible, in addition to our news article. The very first review is about the coveted set from NECA, the "Ultimate Flasher Raphael and Casey Jones" 2-pack!

ToyFarce News got very lucky and managed to get one of those set from the Neca store, the day it was released on their website, at the end of June. However, thanks to the global pandemic and the post system being generally crappy, the set didn't arrive until early August. That means the SDCC exclusive ones might not reach us until later sept/oct... Oh well.

 This is a very nice set with tons of accessories. Casey Jones comes with multiple weapons and set of hands, and Flasher Raph' comes with extra sets of hands, bandanas, weapons, a pizza slice, and a fedora, to the delight of a certain part of the internet community!

Now, the mandatory "same poses than on the back of the packaging" because I have no imagination:

"Class is pain 101. Your instructor is Casey Jones!"

 

"Look, I don't wanna fight you... - Well, tough rocks, pal!"

 

"A Jose Canseco bat? Tell me you didn't pay money for this..."

 

"Raphael wins!! 1-Nothiiing!"

 

Now, it was time to look into the "Ultimate Flasher" feature from the Raphael figure. We were really intrigued after NECA released the "Ultimate Flasher Gremlin", that they would also try to add that feature to their TMNT collection. 

"Wait, what are you doing?"

 

"Oh god, please don't... You win, I give up!! STOP!"

Raph also needed to "share" with his family.

"WHAT THE...? RAPH! STOP!"

 

"STOP! STOP IT THIS INSTANT, PLEASE!"

"THAT'S NOT VERY COWABUNGA OF YOU..." (Notice the different reactions...)

" Look! Just like in that old movie, 'The 7 year itch'! "

All in all, it's an amazing set, and I hope that all the collectors who want it will get it one way or another, after NECA solve their distribution issues. Rating: Awesome /10

Those are but a few of the comments that were left on the announcement post from NECA, about their upcoming SDCC 2020 exclusive Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Musical Mutagen Tour action figure set.

We are now a month later, and the set has been out for a couple of weeks, and mysteriously, it seems that a lot of people are having a hard time finding it. A lot of collectors reported having seen other collectors buy multiple sets in their stores, and the "garbage" set, that was supposed to stay as a shelf warmer in the stores forever, seems to be flying off the shelves at high speed.

What could be the reason? Could it be that NECA didn't send enough sets? No, it has been revealed by NECA that there is a high quantity of sets available and that everybody should be able to get theirs, sooner or later. Could it be that the stores are hiding them, then? No, it's been documented all over the internet that those sets can be found in the electronics sections in Walmarts... Or could it be that the people commenting are actually full of crap themselves, and ended up buying it anyway??

ToyFarce News invites everybody to check the names of people who left a negative comment on the announcement post, and search their recent activity in the collector's groups. You'd be surprised!

There are tons of different toy collectors. Some open their figures and display them 'loose', while others keep their entire collections 'MISB' (mint in sealed box). ToyFarce News had the opportunity to interview Sebastian, an in-box collector who took it a bit to the extreme...

ToyFarce News: 

Sebastian, thank you for having us in your home for this interview. I can see a lot of boxes in your living room...

Sebastian: 

Yes. As an in-box collector, I keep everything in the box. I have a huge collection of Hot Toys figures, that I keep in the box. I have never seen the figures. I've just never removed them from the box. I keep everything protected and pristine in the box. Also, my sofa and television are still in the cardboard boxes they came with, I have Ikea furniture still in the cardboard boxes, my bed and bedside table, etc... This is how I prefer it.

What started all this?

Sebastian:

When I was a child, I didn't have a lot of toys. When I went to a friend's home, I would see all his action figures that he played with, he had them loose, and I thought it was wrong. The toys are supposed to be kept in their boxes, sealed, for additional value.

How is Sebastian's every day life?

Sebastian:

I'm just like anybody else. I wake up on my bed, which is still in the plastic wrap, I turn off my alarm clock on my bedside table (still in the box). Then, I take a look at my amazing collection that is still in pristine condition in the boxes, before going on with my day. I might order a few figures during that day, knowing, of course, that i will never see them, because I will keep them MISB. I also cook my food MISB, it's the only way that I am sure to get all the nutrients from the box.

EVEN MORE IMPROVEMENTS COMING FROM NECA?!

After the disaster that was the online pre-order and availability of the TMNT Casey Jones and Undercover Raphael, and the presumed bots and scalpers getting all the TMNT Metalhead and Casey Jones/Foot Soldiers two-pack, collectors and fans worldwide took to social media to ask NECA to do something.

 

The SDCC exclusive figures seem to have started to appear in Walmarts this week, and, even if there are still "collectors" posting about grabbing 5 or 6 of each at their local stores, "totally not scalping, I swear, the higher price is just for my time + energy spent lol", it seems that there is a slightly better distribution, and more of them can be found (emphasis on 'slightly').

Now, NECA has announced that for the ordering process for the upcoming Tokka and Rahzar 2-pack will be improved, with an entire week given to collectors to preorder the 2-pack (July 31st to August 7th), with a limit of 2 per household.

ToyFarce News got an insider scoop from one of NECA employes saying that more improvements will be announced very soon, and here is a list of them:

- NECA is looking into hiring hackers to 'counter-hack' the ordering process, in order to fight the bots. It seems their security was way too good during the SDCC exclusive orders, and the automated security kept thinking real people were bots, so they are looking to improve on that.

- For each order, a representative of NECA will give you a phone call to thank you for your order, but also ask you a couple of trick questions about your collection, in order to verify that you are not a scalper.

- If the sales of the Tokka and Rahzar 2-pack go way over expectations, Randy Falk, NECA's vice president and general manager of product development will personally hand-deliver the items to you, will come inside your house if invited, pet your dog, help himself in your fridge, and compliment your house decoration.

SMALL SOLDIERS... WAS (ALLEGEDLY) FAKE ?!

ToyFarce News is first to report a thing that will shake Hollywood to its core: It turns out the 1998 hit movie "Small Soldiers" was completely fake and used special effects and puppets to move the action figures !!

In the movie, a toy manufacturer uses missile technology to enhance their action figures, and the action figures end up in a real life battle. 2 different types of figures: the Gorgonites, friendly mutants led by Archer, and the ruthless Commando Elite, under the orders of Major Chip Hazard.

The movie was so well done that it seemed obvious that is was real, but a huge Hollywood leak has now revealed that the action figures from the movie were never real, and were in fact, special effects.

In that leaked picture, we can see that the figures were actually puppets, and needed wires and all sort of metal bars in order to be animated. We've heard that Stan Winston was involved, which is why the special effects seemed so real.

Furthermore, we have also heard that the voices that we heard in the movie were provided by actual actors, in order to fool us even more. The voice of Archer was provided by Frank Langella, the actor famous for his role as Skeletor in 'The Masters of the Universe', and Chip Hazard's voice was the voice of Tommy Lee Jones, who played Two Face in 'Batman Forever'.

To ToyFarce News, this seems like a bigger conspiracy theory than the moon landing being fake or the earth being flat. This is unconceivable that this movie was made using CGI or puppets. Complete nonsense. How do you explains that the toys were available at every toy stores when the movie came out? Are those fake too?

HASBRO REVEALS GIGANTIC G.I.JOE USS FLAGG 2.0 !!

Who can forget the G.I.Joe USS Flagg Aircraft Carrier playset? Released in 1985, the USS Flagg was a gigantic playset, one of the biggest, still to this day. Comics Alliance referred to it in retrospect as the ultimate playset which represented to a child "no better way to gain false friendship and genuine jealousy", and that is spot on !

ToyFarce News got the exclusive scoop through an anonymous source that Hasbro will reveal what many fans and collectors have been asking for years during the SDCC@Home 2020: The U.S.S Flagg 2.0, an updated version of the enormous playset.

Due to the modern day G.I.Joe Classified figures being taller than the G.I.Joe  figures from the past, the U.S.S Flagg 2.0 will also be bigger, badder and better than the previous one. It will come with the same features, updated to today's technology, such as an actual megaphone that will be Bluetooth-operated, so you can give your commands from your phone.

The size of the box will be so big that the distribution will be done using actual Aircraft Carriers in order to provide the collectible to all collectors worldwide. 

This is an actual picture of the prototype, displayed in one of Hasbro's toy designer's living room. "I couldn't take pictures anywhere else, because this thing won't fit through the door, so it's kinda stuck in my living room for the time being." No release date has been announced, as of writing.

BOTS HAPPY TO FINALLY BE ABLE TO SECURE FIGURES FOR THEMSELVES !

"The humans always order all the figures, every single time! *beep boop* For once, the bots managed to get some orders through, and we're really glad we did!"      

Over the last couple of weeks, there has been several fiascos involving online orders, NECA, Hasbro and Walmart/Target. First, it was the NECA Casey Jones and Undercover Raphael 2-pack, that went live and was instantly sold out on Walmart's website. Then, NECA promised to make things easier for the following TMNT movie 2-packs, Casey Jones and Foot Soldiers 2-pack and Metalhead, by adding options to order on their neca store online, which were then sold out in a few minutes as well... Then, Hasbro decided to release an entire line of Star Wars Black Series as Walmart exclusives, and we can only imagine how it went after the last few attempts to sell things online.

Multiple collectors have been complaining about bots being used to order multiple sets of these figures in order to make a profit, so ToyFarce News reached out to those bots so that they can give their side of the story:

"Bots collect figures too! *beep beep* We're always accused of scalping, but it's not true! I collect Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figures from NECA, and I needed those sets, so this is why i ordered them! *beep boop* We need to stop these accusations that bots only want to scalp items..."

If you live near a Walmart and are lucky enough, you might have witnessed some "figure swaps", or "fig swaps", a lost art that consists on having someone (generally, a selfish, greedy a**hole) buy a figure from Walmart, go home, open it, pick whatever he wants from the package, then putting some other, cheaper, or less-wanted figure back in the package, and bringing it back to the store for a refund. The Walmart employees are generally clueless about it, and, let's be honest, are not paid enough to care. 

ToyFarce News has collected a few absurd ones over the years on various Facebook groups and Instagram, and here are a few that should give you a chuckle. Oh, and if you do that... maybe, please don't?

Remember that time when the Bat-Family and KGBeast were in Star Wars? ToyFarce News remembers... Man, those crossovers are getting a bit out of hand!

The Marvel Legends figures are usually victims of figure swaps, due to the 'resealable' aspect of the packaging. Here, we can see Allen Iverson as Shang-Chi, the master of Kung Fu, and the Probe droid from Empire Strikes Back, *CRAMMED* into a Black Cat blister.

That one time when Shuri from Black Panther was the yellow power ranger. There was a crossover with the Ninja Turtles in Power Rangers in Space, so why not a crossover with T'Challa? 

At least, this one is honest, saying it is missing pieces... when the entire figure and its accessories are completely missing. I know that Rhodey/War Machine has been recasted already once, but that might be too much.

Last but not least, this is just beautiful. The figure didn't even fit, and in the entire chain of people that interacted with it, nobody at any point, cared. From the idiot putting that figure back in the blister, to the cashier that refunded it, to the worker that put it back in the shelves, not a single person actually thought  'Ok, there might be something wrong'. Amazing!

ToyFarce News has reached out to Walmart to ask if there was a plan to educate their employees to recognize a fig swap, which would include a 20h training, several tests, a quick pop-culture guide to recognize characters and the franchises they belong to, etc... and Walmart simply replied " LOL, no. "

The worrying part is that some people do this for figures of pretty much the same value, replacing a figure worth $20 to a figure worth $20. If you don't have $20, but still need to get the new figures, and technically steal them from the store, you might want to review your priorities and choices in life...

X-MEN MARVEL LEGENDS SENTINEL - MORE TIERS REVEALED !!

On Friday, Hasbro launched a Haslab crowdfunding campaign for a gigantic X-Men Marvel Legends Sentinel figure. All X-Men fans around the world were really excited, and it didn't take long for the campaign to be fully funded.

After being fully funded, different tiers started to appear. When the campaign reached 8000 backers, the first tier was revealed, with the addition of a Sentinel Master Mold head to the set, and another tier was revealed later, adding a battle damaged version of the head and hand of the Sentinel.

ToyFarce News got the exclusive scoop on what the next tiers will be, thanks to a leaked info by an employee of Hasbro. Here are the infos for all of you Marvel Legends fans!

Tier 3 (10 000 backers): A rainbow color afro for the Master Mold head will be added to the set! It can also be used on the 2 other heads.

Tier 4 (12 000 backers): An "undercover disguise" for the Sentinel, just like in that X-Men episode when the Sentinels try to sign up for Xavier's school.

 

Tier 5 (14 000 backers): Oh, the nostalgia! Hasbro will add to their sentinel figure the exact same action as the very first Sentinel action figure from 1994 from ToyBiz, with the buttons on the knees that eject the feet to make the Sentinel fall down!

Tier 6 (20 000 backers): This is the one tier to reach, people!! Just like McFarlane Toys and their fourth Spawn variant figure (yes, we are doing inside jokes now!), Hasbro will add an Uncanny Mutant Repellent purple trumpet to their Sentinel!
